Thought Picnic: Live your life freely and we'll live ours

Celebrating my partner

When I published a tweet, this morning congratulating my partner on his birthday this morning, that was all I intended, to celebrate him as my significant other and hopefully, make it a special day amongst my community of friends.
Obviously, the pictures attached to the tweet were happy and romantic as one should expect between people in a relationship. That such expressions appear to be a rarity to some is entirely no fault of ours, we are just living our own lives.
Invariably, people in love would most likely kiss regardless of gender pairing. If in an ordinary setting we observe two people kissing without attributing any roles to them, we would immediately conclude they are in love.

Not that strange
If we dispense of the seemingly traditional stereotypes to our schooled inclinations from limited exposure, ignorance out of the lack of knowledge of the existence of things, prejudice, bigotry, or the absence of the ability to explore life beyond our worldview, two males kissing or two females kissing would not seem that strange, they are simply expressing love for each other.
It might come as a surprise to some that same-sex attraction embodies the fullest spectrum of human interaction, it is not limited to the physical, but it includes the heart, the mind, the soul and every other human endeavour. That means same-sex pairings are capable of friendships, relationships, falling in love, entering into civil partnerships and getting married.
Our legal standing
There are jurisdictions in the world where there are constitutional protections on sexual orientation against harm and discrimination, whilst also providing them with the full legal framework of matrimonial and spousal rights, even in South Africa. That many other countries have not caught up to that ideal does not invalidate the reality of what it portends and how people who have those rights choose to exercise them.
Now, I am not here to proselytise or pursue an agenda, that is not my purpose, there are activists and advocates doing the amazing work of ensuring the fundamental human rights of the broad LGBTQ+ community. What we would not do is hide from the world.
We belong in our communities whether we are accepted or not, we will thrive in our lives and careers regardless, and for what it is worth, we would proclaim and celebrate the lives of our significant others because that is who they are significant, purposeful and relevant.
No apology tendered
In the end, even if the apparently abnormal to you, but normal to us and many who seek the greater human diversity cannot be countenanced by you, the very least you can do is, ‘Live and let live.’ We are asking no more from anyone than to enjoy the pursuit of happiness without let or hindrance, the freedoms you enjoy in your lives are those we seek to be accorded to many ostracised, stigmatised, vilified, persecuted, prosecuted, maimed, and harmed for who they are, and that is always and forever a just cause to stand for.
We make no apology for the love we share; we are whether you believe the science or espouse a myopic belief system as natural as anyone else, probably different, maybe individual, usually unique, or disputably alternative, but never chimeral. We have existed since the beginning of time and will continue to exist for as long as humanity thrives. We are here to stay and will not be obliterated or diminished.
In closing, our hearts are warmed by the support, the messages and the goodwill that has been shown us and the many birthday greetings to Brian. We cannot thank you enough and we work towards a better world where no one needs fear for who they are or who they love.

The UK: The politics of kissing about

Kissing hands
The bureaucracy that undergirds the government in the UK is so quite developed that it is possible for a Prime Minister to hand over power to another in a day without creating a power vacuum, we have continuity built into the system because of Her Majesty's Civil Service.
Yesterday afternoon, just two days after it was confirmed that Theresa May would be the only contestant for the leadership of the Conservative and Unionist Party, and being the party of government, consequently the Prime Minister, the First Lord of the Treasury and the Minister for the Civil Service; everything was set to commence a new dispensation of government.
David Cameron went to Buckingham Palace to tender his resignation to Her Majesty, The Queen, Elizabeth II and The Queen invited Theresa May to form a government. The prospective Prime Minister, when invited thus, is said to have been invited to kiss the hands.
Kissing up
This symbolic gesture includes pledging loyalty and fealty to the sovereign and by terms a requirement to serve in Her Majesty’s government.
The first act of the Prime Minister is to form a cabinet of ministers, the Prime Minister occupies the first Great Office of State and the other offices of The Chancellor of the Exchequer and The Second Lord of the Treasury (Finance Minister), The Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs and The Secretary of State for the Home Department are appointed by the Prime Minister, along with other members of the cabinet primarily from amongst elected and sitting members of the House of Commons.
Ministers of the Crown can also be appointed from the House of Lords and where civilians (non-members of parliament) are required to be ministers, they are ennobled by appointment to the House of Lords.
Kissing teeth
There is no nomination, vetting and confirmation process as seen in Presidential systems of government, the Prime Minister can appoint and sack ministers at their discretion. Though a gentle let-down would be to ask for the resignation of a minister, if the said minister has lost the confidence of the Prime Minister.
The cabinet posts come at the invitation of the Prime Minister and it can be the opportunity to kiss the butt when asked to serve or to kiss the dust when a promotion or a retention is denied.
Theresa May has made some interesting ministerial appointments, some that have had us kissing the teeth with Boris Johnson becoming the Foreign Secretary, how incredulous. Yet, we could be kissing the lips with Philip Hammond replacing George Osborne as the Chancellor of the Exchequer.
Kissing dust
Michael Gove has been made to kiss the dust having kissed away opportunity by the way he betrayed Boris Johnson in running for the leadership of the Tory Party, though it goes without saying that Boris Johnson has a way of kissing up and falling upwards when others in the kinds of holes he has dug himself into would have no political mileage left in their careers.
Earlier in the day, we thought we had kissed goodbye the smug Jeremy Hunt as Secretary of State for Health, it was a false rumour, he retains the power to deliver the kiss of death to the NHS.
Kissing babies
Whilst we watch how Theresa May charts the course of her leadership, it is unlikely one is eager to kiss the ring with these personalities swanning around Whitehall. There’ll be a lot of kissing going on before the politicians begin to kiss the babies again in 2020.

My father is my mother

Said it with kisses

Mwah! Mwah! Mwah! Three kisses as I boarded the bus that took us off the plane to the airport terminal. As I looked back to see who was being overwhelmed with this most expressive kind of emotional bonding, I saw a man probably late 30’s maybe in his 40’s and a young man of about 13.

His son, and they had gone away on a long weekend to Berlin, the mother did not seem to be in their number, so I suppose it was a boy’s outing for male bonding or something like that.

I was surprised at the effect it had on me, not so much the sudden longing for a child but the fact that one can find someone to lavish love on, be so strong and protective whilst vulnerably expressive such that all are assured of security with each other.

The young man could well have been embarrassed but he did not show it, alas, my father never deigned to exhibit a tendency to the effete, but that is not to say my mum was quicker to kiss than to try her backhand swing across my face.

My father is my mother

Then, in the news, we find that a baby girl has been mothered by her father, a difficult subject of analysis but a reality that our society has to contend with.

Yesterday, I posed a dilemma to the warring factions of the Anglican Church who having been split by the subject of homosexuals in the clergy must wonder how to celebrate the possible Christianity of a girl born to a natural woman who is legally a man married to another woman who could not conceive.

In many ways, people seem to have a yearning for children, though many do not realise that desire for all sorts of reasons, the most serious being the inability to conceive when you have all the biological functions to effect conception.

Some would be minded to adopt, though one sees a lot of celebrities who along with their natural children still adopt to create larger diverse families.

Sort yourself out

I could understand what would have lead to a legally registered man deciding to conceive and take a pregnancy to term rather that run the gauntlet of prejudiced, conservative and uncompassionate adoption agencies.

One thing that cannot be violated is the ability to conceive and carry your own baby regardless of the social ructions one might encounter, the parents only have to work harder at making the child feel worthy, worthwhile and be of great worth in their community and society.

The girl would be fine

Many are already second guessing what life the girl would have and how it might turn out horribly for them, in the news yesterday on BBC World, they brought in a rather virulently conservative psychiatrist who condemned the parents as money-grabbing, insensitive and selfish – the commentary was completely off-putting no matter what she had to say.

However, in the end, I am still a supporter of strong family units even though I do not seem to be in one of note apart from running a large family of one.

Society is the bigger pool

Society is changing in ways we would never have countenanced a generation ago, apart from the unfairly derided single-parent family unit; gender is no more particular significance as to the pairings of persons that make up the parenthood in a family.

Where the church and many other religious organisations seem to be missing the greatest cause for proselytising is that their organisations are made up of people drawn from the society in which they sit and definitely not the other way round.

The so well sanitised religious adherents appropriately indoctrinated in the most dastardly bigotries and prejudices need to spend their everyday lives in society being examples that should encourage others not isolate and alienate those that seem to be different.

Unfortunately, church leaders are still too busy squabbling to attend to their calling, meanwhile, people are being called into ever more bizarre lifestyles that are fast becoming the norm.

A cad kisses a pretty woman

Oh! Brother

http://www.youtube.com/v/3oMsUtQhgH4

At the earliest opportunity they were out on the streets burning effigies, pictures and chanting all sorts of abuse.

That in itself contributes to the greenhouse gases but this also seems to be a common type of displaying displeasure in civil demonstrations in the Asian sub-continent.

And would have brought this about? Shilpa Shetty of the UK Celebrity Big Brother 2007 fame and shame was hosting an AIDS awareness event in India and she pulled Richard Gere on stage.

It transpired that after a brief talk Richard Gere took her hand, kissed it, then pulled her towards him, hugged her and then kissed her and kissed her again repeatedly as he leaned well over her.

The audiences applauded until some right-wing Hindu organisation, politicians and lawyers decided this was seemingly outraging public decency and now; Shilpa and Richard have to answer to a judge with the possibility of serving time.

Mr. Gere was no Officer and a Gentleman in his actions, he was playing out Pretty Woman to the extreme such that one felt a bit squeamish after viewing the first kiss.

The backlash is however interesting considering this is the country that gave us Kama Sutra; one would be forgiven for thinking the way India got to be the second most populous country in the world was by thinking of the birds and the bees.

Such rank hypocrisy belittles a people with a long, varied and interesting history; backward, illiterate, regressive and ignorant are words that come to mind; but they can never be used to describe India in this context, however, I might be wrong.
